The Hanna Story
Like Mother, Like Son
Shortly after the Iraq War started, millions of Iraqi refugees began fleeing the violence of their war-torn country. The United States accepted nearly 100,000 such victims, allowing them to immigrate and restart their lives in cities across America in places like San Diego, California.
But while these newly settled refugees were now safe from war, they encountered a new problem – how were they going to restart their lives in America when they could not understand English?
As a volunteer interpreter in San Diego for nearly 30 years, Jennifer Hanna suddenly found herself spread thin as she attempted to help as many of these refugees as possible. From teaching English to interpreting medical appointments, Jennifer was overwhelmed with calls for help.
Her son, Tom, an attorney with immigration experience, offered to lend a hand, managing her schedule and recruiting interpreters and translators to assist.
In August of 2010, just a year into their endeavor, the mother and son duo founded Hanna Interpreting Services LLC. The name was new, but their mission never wavered: To bridge the communication gap for those in need through excellent and compassionate language services.
Today, the company has grown exponentially to nearly 10,000 interpreters and translators helping organizations worldwide communicate in over 200 languages.
Jennifer and Tom still play a direct role in shaping the culture and values of a homegrown company that proudly plays a pivotal role in the communication between cultures, organizations, non-profits, institutions, government agencies and more.
But through it all, their mission will always stay true: Deliver more than just words.
